22°N -- Perfect Latitude

Sunset from Cabo Marina -- not even the best sunset to be had around these parts

This part of Mexico is a desert and therefore sunny as heck all the time. If it were summertime, I'd fry to a crisp in seconds, but it's not summertime; it's close to the winter solstice.

If I recall correctly, Cabo San Lucas is somewhere around 22° north latitude, just within the tropics which start at 23° and change, north and south.

I have to say, to my sun-worshipping ass, this is the perfect latitude at this time of year. I have not applied sunscreen once and have spent hours in the sun during the hottest part of the day (1-4pm) for the past three days. Not only have I not burned, but I'm getting the deepest, healthiest tan of my entire life. I gaze at my bronzed body after getting out of the shower with great admiration. This is an entirely foreign feeling to me.

Not only that, but the nights are deliciously cool. I have been sleeping more deeply than I have in years with my window open and love having the neighborhood roosters act as my alarm clock. The air here is infinitely cleaner than that dirty crap in New York, and it didn't even take one full night to realize that cracking the window is far more pleasant than running the air conditioner which is just stupid here, at least at this time of year.

The water is also perfect. Sometimes the water in the tropics freaks me out a little with its bathtub-like warmth. The water here is cool. I would guess it's a couple degrees warmer than the water off the southern shore of Long Island in July, where I do most of my swimming in the summer. It's cool enough to offer a pleasant respite from the afternoon heat, but warm enough to invite you in. The waves are nice, too -- much smaller than Atlantic surf but enough to body surf your way in after an invigorating swim.

This is the perfect distance from the Equator, at least at this time of year. I feel so lucky and can't wait to see my first whales and dolphins which they tell me are coming within a week or two!

It was a little "crazy" of me to have come down here, but the freakin' world is crazy right now. Maybe a "crazy" reaction to that is the right reaction. I know two things for sure: I'm glad I'm not freezing my ass off in NYC listening to BS and lies about the scamdemic on the news, and I'm glad I'm at this latitude at this time of year. I think I might make it a regular thing, shooting for 22°N near the winter solstice. That's what the whales do, and they're pretty damn smart.
